The Redeye 27.08.00
(by Brock)

The wonderful Gabi had arranged a bus for a group of us to get up to Islington for this one, and after a few runs around the one way system, and a few desperate calls to the band we finally found the venue. None of us had been to the Redeye in Islington before, so we didn't really know what to expect. To be honest I think the band were a little disappointed that it was'nt one of the larger venues in town, in fact I think 'pokey' would be a fair description, perhaps 'intimate' would be a kinder one..
Jesus Fix are still a relatively new name in London, and as such have to accept support slots at the moment. The good side of this is that we didn't have to wait long for them to start, and we were still sober enough to enjoy their criminally short half hour slot. Despite the size of the Redeye, they have a decent PA with a competent engineer who managed to get the band a really well balanced sound, and as soon as K's guitar riffs ripped through PB's atmospheric smoke enhanced keyboard intros, and C's tub thumping unique style of gut wrenching drumming kicked in, we all looked at each other with 'oh yeah! this is gonna be good' grins on our faces. The first track was one of their newer ones, ( title escapes me I'm afraid ) and it had the girls dancing, the blokes jiggling their pints, and friends of the other bands sitting up and taking serious notice.

The set progressed cleanly, with the beautiful track 'Judas Kiss' being the highlight for me, ( I really would recommend you download that if you haven't ) , and way before I expected it, their half hour was over. Cries of 'more!' and 'get back up there you slack f***ers' had to be ignored because of the strict time allotment and we wandered back to what must be a contender for the 'shortest bar in London' to get happily drunk to the next two bands. All in all a great night was had by all, I would've liked to see JF headlining, they were certainly the best act in my opinion ( both other bands used drum machines which is a pet hate of mine ) although the headliners did open their set with a decent cover of Iggy Pop's 'I wanna be your dog' which I enjoyed.

Big thanks to Chris Twyman for the photography, Great job.
